A Trip That Changed Everything

On our first trip since having the baby, we left him with my MIL. She insisted she could handle it.
Two days in, I checked the baby cam—she was asleep while our son cried himself red. Minutes passed. Nothing. By the time he stopped, it was from exhaustion.
We drove home. She shrugged it off: “Babies cry, that’s how they build lungs.” My heart broke. We took him and left.
Later, I learned she’d done this before. That’s when we drew the line—no more unsupervised visits.
Months passed. Then, after a scare, she admitted she was overwhelmed. This time, she showed up differently—present, gentle, patient.
Forgiveness came slowly, but we let her back in, carefully.
Lesson: Always trust your instincts. Protect your child. But if someone truly changes, sometimes it’s worth opening the door—just a crack.
